Young Leader Denzel blogs about the Mini Commonwealth Games Day in Glasgow!

Denzel

On Monday 24th of February 2014, I was invited to participate in Mini-Commonwealth Games organised by F.A.R.E. at the Emirates Arena. I was really excited to be part of this event because it would be my first time in the Emirates Arena. I would be helping out (volunteering) and also having fun. This event counted as part of my Level 2 Community Sports Leadership Award.

The atmosphere on the day was loud, electric and buzzing with almost 1000 primary school pupils eager to get down in their school sports kits and get onto the athletics track and show what they are made of. I was allocated with a primary school and led them round the track for the grand opening ceremony, after that I took them to their allocated seats. My role on that day was to help the teachers with anything the pupils needed such as water, pack launches and toilet breaks. But it seemed like because of the amount of fun and enthusiasm, every individual performing on the track had forgotten all about the words food or water. There was not even a slight sign of hunger or tiredness – but rather a hunger for success. The amount of energy generated from the spectators and even the young athletes was amazing and outstanding.

At the end of the day, I was gutted that the event only lasted for about 6 hours but as the saying goes, everything that has a beginning must have an end. But in general, I had lots of fun, made lots of friends and enjoyed watching young people generate enough motivation, hunger and effort to be the best at what they do. I learnt a lot on my journey to becoming a Sports Leader.

There is a lot that I took from the event which will help me in future.

Thank you to FARE for enabling me to be part of this fantastic event.
